Gregory Flato
Co-Investigator, Environment and Climate Change Canada
Dr Flato has spent his career in the development of a series of global climate models used to simulate historical climate variations and project future climate change. He is an elected Vice Chair of the IPCC’s Working Group I and served as a drafting author and review editor in the IPCC 6th Assessment Report. Previously, he served as a Coordinating Lead Author of the model evaluation chapter in the IPCC 5th Assessment. He also serves as co-Chair of the World Climate Research Programme’s Working Group on Coupled Modelling which coordinates international climate modelling efforts.
From 2004-2014, and 2018-2019, he served as manager of the Canadian Centre for Climate Modelling and Analysis, which is the only institution in Canada that develops and uses global and regional Earth System Models to provide historical climate change simulations, and projections of future climate change.
Dr Flato received his BSc and MSc in Civil Engineering from the University of Alberta, Canada, and a PhD in Engineering Science from Dartmouth College, USA. He received the Deputy Minister’s Commendation in 2016 for contributions to climate science in Canada and internationally.
